Age at Which Training in Writing Needs to Be Provided

Posted on 01/08/2022

As children grow from one stage to another they naturally hit their developmental milestones. One such milestone is the ability to write. Writing is a fine motor skillthatrequires assistance and practice to perfect.
So how does a child find it interesting to write?
By nature, all children are curious to explore what they see around them. They imitate actions, behaviors, etc. The same is for writing, as a child sees a pen in someone’s hands he/she tries to get the same object as what they see and try to imitate, in the process, they learn to scribblethat’s how they learn to grip the pen or pencil in their hand. As they reach their toddler age they try to copy letters that they see around them, this development mostly happens during toddler age. This is the best time to teach those letters and how to write them. Many educationalists prescribe that by the age of three a child should develop the curiosity to hold a pencil and write something. During this age, they can be trained easily to develop good handwriting. Parents can enroll children of this age in preschool to help them develop various educational skills. Children during this age are in their learning phase. They can accept various ideas more easily than adults. From ages 3 to 5 the child develops writing and reading in the particular language taught.
There may be differences between each child and they may not achieve this developmental stage during this age. They can be given extra practice to achieve this skill.
Some practices that can follow to develop writing skills are:
 Tracing letters
Teachers can give worksheets for tracing letters to students and teach them how to write neatly in line.
 Large Writing Implements
Provide different types of writing equipment like crayons, pencils, sketch pens, etc to students and let them write with this equipment on plain paper. Make sure that they write as big as they could in order to understand the flow of writing.

 Word games
After learning letters teachers can move to the next phase to teach sounds of letters and words through games. This will allow student easily grasp words and their pronunciation.
 Cursive Writing Practice
Teachers can provide cursive writing books to students to practice letters and how to join them and how to use various lines and curves to write continuous words and sentences.
 Imitating the sounds of letters
Teachers can teach the sounds of letters and spell words to understand letters through audio and visual skills.

A preschool is a place where a child can develop his/her educational skills. Hence, children should be trained to write at preschool age to develop good handwriting.
